The Gurdies

We awoke to rain against the window in the morning. The forecast on the tv said there would be thunder storms and substantial rain fall. So of course I felt totally at home!!
We were collected at 10.00 am and drove to the Company where my friend Maha works. This is the agent of Smit – Chemcolour. We met a few of Maha’s colleagues and looked around. We saw crocodile leather and kangaroo skins. Of course these animals had died of old age 
Wij werden wakker van de regen tegen de ramen. De weersvoorspelling op de tv was omweer en hevige regenval. Dus ik voelde me helemaal thuis!!
Wij werden opgehaald om 10.00 uur en reden naar het bedrijf van mijn vriend Maha. Dit is de agent van Smit – Chemcolour. Wij ontmoeten een paar collega’s van Maha en keken rond. Wij zagen leer van krokodil en kangaroo. Deze dieren waren natuurlijk overleden vanwege ouderdom 

We left for The Gurdies at 12.00 pm. This is the place where Maha and Isabelle have their country home. It is beautiful, with lots of land, a wide range of flowers and breathtaking views. After a lovely lunch we went for a drive to Phillip Island – Cowes. This Island is a peninsula. The weather was so different from yesterday. From 35°C to 18°C was a shock to the system, and it was pouring down. We walked along the pier and headed back in to town quickly to be warmed up with hot chocolates and coffees (yeah …. You understood correctly – not alcohol!). We stopped at the local supermarket so I could buy the ingredients to make Banoffee Pie.
Wij gingen om 12.00 uur naar The Gurdies. Dit is de plek waar Maha en Isabelle hun buitenhuis hebben. Het is erg mooi, met veel land, een hoop verschillende bloemen en adembenemende uitzichten. Na een lekkere lunch reden wij naar Phillip Island – Cowes. Dit is een Schiereiland. Het weer as anders dan gisteren. Van 35°C naar 18°C was een overgang voor ons – het regende “honden en katten”. Wij liepen langs de pier en gingen snel terug het stadje in om op te warmen met hete chocolade en koffie (jaaaa….je ziet het goed – geen alkohol!!). Bij een locale supermarkt kochten wij de ingredienten voor Banoffee Pie.

At home the rain had stopped, but it was still quite chilly. We relaxed for a while and at 6.30 pm we drove to the nearby Ozzie Pub for our dinner. It was was lovely old building, more than 100 years old. The food was tasty and the (white) wine was cold. There was live music ……guitarist/ukele player and an elderly lady singing (don’t worry it wasn’t me). Guess they were husband and wife. They played some golden oldies – some of which we could sing along to.
Thuis aangekomen was het gestopt met regenen, maar nog steeds koud. Wij ontspanden een tijdje en om 18.30 uur gingen wij naar een Australische Pub voor ons diner. Het was een leuk, oud gebouw, meer dan 100 jaar oud. Het eten was lekker en de (witte) wijn was koud. Er was live muziek….gitaar/ukele speler en een oudere dame die zong (wees niet bang….ik was het niet). Denk dat ze man en vrouw waren. Ze speelden gouwe ouwe – sommige konden we mee zingen.

After a lovely dinner we returned to the house. The guys drank some single malt and smoked cigars on the verander. The girls stayed inside next to the roaring fire and drank wine. Oh what a life we lead.
Naar een gezellig diner gingen we terug naar huis. De mannen dronken malt whiskey en rookte een sigaar op de veranda. De meiden bleven binnen, naast de warme haard en dronken wijn. Ohhh wat een verschikkelijk leven hebben we.

After a good nights sleep I got up at 8 am in order to put my condensed milk in a saucepan of water to boil for 2 hours. This in preparation of the banoffee pie.
Maha was also up as they promised to make a typical Sri Lankan meal for us for lunch.
Na een goede nachtrust stond ik om 8 .00 uur op om mijn gecondenseerde melk te koken (in blik) gedurende 2 uur. Dit in voorbereiding voor de banoffee pie.

We drove to a small quanit village nearby called Loch. We looked around Antique Shops and had a hot drink in the cafe there. On our way back we drove past a very old and small railway station. Arie, being a Train Geek loved this.
Back to the house for our tasty Sri Lankan meal. Beef curry, lentils, potato curry, green beans, rice and salad. This was rounded off by a piece of Banoffee pie.
Wij reden naar een klein dorpje Loch. Wij keken rond in antiek winkels en nam een warme drank in het cafe. Op de terugweg reden we langs een heel oud en kleine treinstationetje. Arie, als treingek, vond dit geweldig.
Terug naar huis om van onze heerlijke Sri Lankan maaltijd te genieten. Rundvlees curry, lentils, aardappel curry, sperziebonen, rijst en salade. Dit werd afgerond met een stukje Banoffee Pie.

We left at 4pm to travel back to the appartment (about an hours drive). We had left our large suitcases here. We said our goodbyes to Maha and Isabelle and couldn’t thank them enough for their wonderful hospitality. Hope we can return the favour one day in Holland.
Wij gingen om 16.00 uur terug naar het appartement (ong. 1 uur rijden). Wij hadden onze grote koffers daar gelaten. Wij namen afscheid van Maha en Isabelle en konden hun niet genoeg bedanken voor hun fantastisch gastvrijheid. Hopelijk kunnen we dit een keer, in Nederland, terug doen.

Now we are waiting in the Qantas business lounge. Our flight to NZ is at 11.45 pm and we arrive there tomorrow morning at 5 am (the time difference is +2 hours in NZ)….so the flight is actually 3.15 hrs.

Nu zitten wij in de Qantas Business Lounge te wachten. Onze vlucht naar NZ is om 23.45 uur en wij arriveren daar morgen ochtend om 05.00 uur (het tijdverschil is + 2 uur in NZ)….dus de vlucht is maar 3.15 uur.
